The Power of Giving Compassionate Touch

When I was 33 years old, I got dumped after a five-year relationship where we were engaged to be married. I was blindsided by it. It hurt about as badly as anything else I had experienced up till then, except for the day my dad died.

It was a Saturday afternoon at the start of a long weekend, so that gave me exactly three days to ‘get over it’ enough to be able to return to work. I was currently in the middle of leading a Thai yoga massage teacher training program with students who had come from around the world. It’s not as if I could call in sick.

The rest of the weekend was a blur. About the only thing I remember was an inner voice telling me that now, more than ever, my personal practice was key. Meditate, get on my yoga mat, learn from inspiring teachers and remember to breathe.

I showed up that first day back with a heavy and vulnerable heart, but then I did what I had been doing that whole month, not to mention most of the previous seven years. I engaged in the practice of compassionate touch. I taught what I knew to the best of my ability, let the moment take over, and somehow got through the day.

Nine years later as I look back, I realize it was then that I really knew that with Thai yoga massage I was onto something special. This was more than a form of bodywork, it was a spiritual practice. It was a way to connect with people and with the beauty of life in a way that could help me through the hard times, just as much as it could help celebrate the joy of it all.

The Heart of Compassionate Touch

This is a massage which is founded on a platform of compassionate touch. The only prerequisites are to to engage in meditation and a metta (loving kindness) practice. From there we learn techniques that come from the core where we use our whole body to give. This way, we get to take care of ourselves while helping our partner through a heavenly flow where the best of yoga meets massage.

The very definition of a great massage experience is that it needs to be at least as good to give as it is to receive. This turns the notion of balance into something much greater than can be measured on a scale. The kind of balance this beneficial practice brings is to help elevate one another. What that ends up producing between the two of us often leaves people speechless from how good it feels and what it means to connect on a whole other level. The idea that ‘we are one’ becomes an incredible and undeniable lived experience.

Your partner on the receiving end gets to feel their stress and pain melt while you get a direct experience of bliss.

It is why, in all honesty I’m on a mission to share this knowledge with yogis, meditators, martial artists and really anyone on a spiritual path. It’s because the power of massage at home between loved ones is often overlooked as a way to help provide for a quality life, incredible happiness and support. It is a way to build a bridge and take the benefits of your practice and share it in a most profound way and to shift from the head to the heart; both giving and receiving.

Yet it is something that is totally accessible to anyone with an afternoon to spare to tap into your own natural ability to touch what this is all about. Giving this kind of touch isn’t tiring or hard work, it is a taste of freedom and universal love.

And if it speaks to you, then perhaps you’ll have discovered a new way to help you through some of life’s profound certainties.

19 Delicious Ways the World Cooks Pork Shoulder

We love cooking with pork shoulder. It’s a versatile and economical cut that takes deliciously to roasting, braising, stewing, and slow cooking. Low, moist heat turns the meat so tender and succulent, it just falls away from the bone and practically melts in the mouth. In the U.S., pork shoulder is the perfect pick for pulled pork. Home cooks from other countries and cultures, of course, have their own delicious ways of preparing pork shoulder. 1. Crispy Pork Carnitas

Cubes of fragrant, spiced pork are slowly cooked in olive oil until they’re crispy on the outside, soft and succulent on the inside. “Bust some up on a warm tortilla, drizzle with braising liquid, top with a little salsa, onion, and cilantro, and you’re probably enjoying the world’s best taco,” says Chef John.


2. Cantonese Barbecued Pork

You’ll marinate strips of pork shoulder in sherry, ginger root, oyster sauce, five-spice powder, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, ketchup, and cinnamon. “This tastes like the pork served in my favorite Chinese restaurant,” says SHERRY. “Serve at room temperature arranged in overlapping layers on a platter. Garnish with cucumber slices, if desired.”

This Texas-style pulled pork recipe features pork shoulder simmered with onions in a tangy chili-seasoned barbecue sauce. Shred the pork and serve on buttered, toasted buns. “Fall-apart tender with good flavor — not too spicy, just enough to tantalize,” says DULCINEA54935.

4. Cuban Pork Roast I

You’ll mash toasted cumin seeds, peppercorns, garlic, and oregano into a paste. And then add it to a marinade with OJ, lime and lemon juices, a little sherry, and olive oil. Enjoy this hearty pork roast with black beans and rice. “If there are any leftovers, make media noches, the Cuban sandwiches that are made with Swiss cheese, ham, and toasted egg bread in addition to roast pork,” says Christine L. 6. Spicy Peruvian Pork

You’ll cut boneless pork shoulder into cubes and marinate them briefly in vinegar, cumin, turmeric, and garlic powder. Then you’ll simply brown the pork and finish by simmering in orange juice, a little water, onion, and the reserved marinade. “This was so delicious! A friend of mine from South America raved about it,” says crcowley.

7. Chef John’s Pork al Latte

This flavorful, incredibly tender, melt-in-the-mouth pork shoulder stew was inspired by a classic Italian dish, maiale al latte (“pork in milk”). Chef John’s version calls for crème fraiche and chicken broth instead of traditional milk. You’ll slowly simmer beautifully browned chunks of pork shoulder with bacon, garlic, and herbs. The sauce develops a luxurious texture and rich taste.

8. Czech Roast Pork

Rub pork shoulder roast with a flavorful mixture of vegetable oil, mustard, caraway seeds, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. You’ll roast the pork in a pan with chopped onions and a little beer. “Roast pork (veprova pecene) is a traditional Czech meal usually served on Sundays,” says none. “Don’t skip the caraway or the beer. They make this dish what it is! Serve it with Knedliky — Czech Dumpling with Sauerkraut (Zeli) and a nice Czech pilsner.”

9. Chef John’s Pork and Beans and Greens

It’s basically beans and greens with an Italian accent. Pieces of seasoned pork shoulder are cooked until crusty and caramelized and served with white beans sautéed briefly with sliced garlic and fresh arugula. “This meal was absolutely fabulous and super simple to make,” says Kim. “Would be great for company because it is so low maintenance.”


10. Ukrainian Baba’s Pork Roast

To this succulent roast pork shoulder roast, you’ll add chopped beets and prunes, serving with a quick sour cream and paprika sauce. “This old recipe features a favorite Ukrainian vegetable: beets,” says Olga Drozd. “This gives the roast a red color.”

11. North Carolina Pulled Pork

This slow-cooker pulled pork recipe features pork shoulder roast, a little ketchup, brown sugar, and red wine vinegar. So easy, it takes just minutes to prep. “I got this from a North Carolina native and it is the best,” says skibunny2k. “It is pretty much foolproof.”

To make this Japanese comfort food, you’ll simply sear slices of pork shoulder and then simmmer them with garlic and ginger, water, soy sauce, brown sugar, and miso. “So much umami going on here,” says mrsbigbird. “The aroma is intoxicating. We serve this with rice and the gravy.”

This rich, delicious pork stew features Brussels sprouts, dark stout beer, balsamic vinegar, and caraway seeds. “Amazing,” says manncastro. “Best stew ever! The Brussels sprouts give it an extra texture and flavor that was just yummy!”

14. Sicilian Pineapple Pork Roast

A pork shoulder roast is browned with fresh rosemary and sage then roasted with tomatoes, onions, and pineapple until wonderfully tender. “A great quickie recipe to tasty-up an economy cut of pork roast,” says STREETCAR. “You can adjust the quantities of herbs used to your own taste.”

15. Pork Yaka Mein a la Dug

In the slow cooker, you’ll combine bone-in pork shoulder roast with chicken broth, water, bouillon cubes, seasoned salt, Cajun seasoning, onion powder, and butter. Shred the tender pork off the bone, and then cook bok choy in the savory broth. “My spin on ‘yaka mein soup’ with pork and bok choy,” says dugpark. “It’s a family favorite. Serve with condiments including crushed red pepper flakes, Parmesan cheese, and lime wedges.”

16. Jambon au Sirop D’Erable

“Translation: Ham in Maple Syrup,” says Wendy. It’s smoked pork shoulder simmered with maple syrup, mustard powder, onion, and cloves. “This French-Canadian recipe is usually served during the winter-season, or at the sugar shacks. It’s great as a main meal served with mashed potatoes and carrots, but is also a great side dish for breakfast. This is my grandmother’s traditional and delicious recipe!”

17. Pozole Rojo (Mexican Pork and Hominy Stew)

Chopped pork shoulder combines with pork loin and hominy in a thick broth flavored with colorful red guajillo chile peppers. “The traditional Mexican dish in the red version,” says Consuelo Aguilar. “Serve with tortilla chips.”

Cubes of pork shoulder are marinated in red wine vinegar, red wine, garlic, bay leaves, cloves, and thyme. “Ah, ‘Vina Dosh,’ a Portuguese dish and tradition of my family,” says Cali-Chef. “It started getting passed down more than 80 years ago when my grandparents came to America from the Azore Islands! Easy to make, but lots of patience to wait for the marinade to make its magic. Serve with Portuguese Linguica and Portuguese Sweet Bread. Hawaiian sweet bread works in a pinch.”

We all love baked potatoes and creamy casseroles, but sometimes we don’t have the time to let those taters roast away in the oven for an hour or two. When you need a hearty and tasty side dish in a snap, check out some of our favorite quick and easy potato side dishes that are ready in about 30 minutes.

1. Microwave Baked Potato

It doesn’t get much faster, or easier, than this. When you don’t have time to bake a potato in the oven the old-fashioned way, you can still have the classic side dish, but in a fraction of the time. Home chef Gina Garner recommends placing the potato in a paper bag while microwaving, to help add extra steam. Remember that the size of the potato and the wattage of your microwave will affect the cooking time, so check on your spud every few minutes.

2. My Crispy Mashed Potato Pancake

The trick to this easy potato pancake is using leftover mashed potatoes from a previous night’s meal. With the addition of some kitchen staples, you can turn something old into something new. Mix and match the herbs, depending on what you have on hand, or toss in a little shredded cheese, for an extra cheesy and gooey pancake.

3. Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potatoes are cut into wedges, then baked in the oven until crisp on the outside and tender in the center. These are a perfect side dish for your next burger night. Feel free to substitute the vegetable or soybean oil with canola, safflower or any other high-heat oil you have on hand.

If you want to add a pop of color or flavor, sprinkle with dried herbs, like thyme or oregano, while roasting, or top with fresh chopped herbs, like parsley or chives, after roasting.

We admit, we’re stretching the 30-minute rule here, but only because it doesn’t get much easier than this recipe. Toss the potatoes in your slow cooker, and by the time you get home, your sides are ready! Wrapping the potatoes in foil helps them to steam, and eliminates any clean-up afterwards.

Amaranth is often called a grain, but it’s really a seed, and you can cook it like rice and oats. Here’s how to use gluten-free amaranth seeds in all kinds of recipes.

Small But Mighty

As you can see from the photo, amaranth seeds are teeny tiny. But don’t let their diminutive size fool you. Naturally gluten-free Amaranth seeds are a complete protein, high in fiber, iron, amino acids and calcium, are easily digestible, and have been shown to lower cholesterol. Pretty amazing for such a small package! And with their pleasantly nutty taste, they add flavor as well as nutrition to any dish.

How to Cook Amaranth

Amaranth is cooked a lot like rice, oats, and other grains: Combine one cup seeds and two cups water or other flavorful cooking liquid (like stock or milk) and bring it to boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes, until the grains are fluffy and the liquid is absorbed.

Amaranth is simple to incorporate into your favorite dishes and baked goods. You can also combine amaranth with other grains, like brown rice or oats, to maximize the flavor and health benefits in your meals. Popped Amaranth: Toast amaranth seeds in a dry skillet over high heat, shaking the pan continuously. Eat the toasted seeds like popcorn (with a bit of salt or nutritional yeast sprinkled on top), or toss them on top of salads, vegetables, or soups for a bit of texture. You can also serve popped amaranth with milk and fruit for a breakfast cereal or layer it into a yogurt parfait.


Amaranth and amaranth flour have a lot of great nutrients. To keep them at their best, refrigerate amaranth for up to 6 months, or buy small quantities and use it quickly.
